A unit with Garrison Formation may mix both models armed with spears and repeater crossbows in the same unit. When taken in this manner, all repeater crossbowmen must be placed in the first rank and remain there. The second and following ranks are made up entirely of spearmen. During the game, remove casualties from the back of the unit as normal; it is assumed that spear-armed models step forward and discard their spears to pick up the repeater crossbows of the fallen first rankers. Only when all the spearmen have been slain can casualties be taken from the repeater crossbowmen in the first rank.
